SUVs Classification and Major Manufacturers

Today I will talk about the classification and major manufacturers of the SUVs. One should know something about these. Combining the functions of one's own need, the knowledge is helpful to select a proper SUV.

According the body size, the SUVs can be classified as compact, midsize, and large.

The compact one has smaller space no matter in passenger space or the cargo area. However it provides better fuel economy. The major manufacturers and models are: Audi Q5,BMW X3, Ford Escape, Jeep Compass, Jeep Cherokee, Honda CR-V, Suzuki Vitara, Mahindra Quanto, Mazda CX-5, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, Mitsubishi ASX, Opel Antara, Range Rover Evoque, Renault Koleos, Skoda Yeti, Chevrolet Captiva, Toyota RAV4,Volkswagen Tiguan and Volvo XC60.

Midsize is sort of SUV which size is between compact and large. Sometimes it is considered similar as the large one.Here are some representatives: Ford Explorer, Acura MDX, Buick Rendezvous, BMW X5, Audi Q7, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Edge, Chevrolet Equinox, Dodge Journey, Dodge Durango, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Nissan Murano, Hyundai Santa Fe, Land Rover Discovery, Tata Safari, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Fortuner, Volkswagen Touareg, Ssangyong Rexton, Jeep Liberty, Mazda CX-9, Pontiac Aztek and Volvo XC90.

The large one has great passenger and cargo space and better safety. However, with rising fuel prices, sales of such SUVs would be affected. By driving traffic, the SUVs can also be treated as crossover and off-road. The name crossover and compact are usually interchangeable. Categories 2-row and 3-row are based on the body arrangement.
